Mrs. Ariel Barnes was born in Forest, Mississippi but moved to Hattiesburg shortly after. She attended Alcorn State University where she earned an Education degree. She taught at Rowan in Hattiesburg and worked at the Hattiesburg Library's Sixth Street Branch for African Americans.
